10 Little West Street, known as The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, is an iconic luxury residential building located in the heart of Battery Park City, Manhattan. Completed in 2001, this prestigious high-rise stands as a symbol of refined urban living and architectural elegance. The building’s connection to the esteemed Ritz-Carlton brand ensures a standard of service and luxury that is unparalleled, offering residents a lifestyle of comfort and convenience in one of New York City’s most sought-after waterfront neighborhoods.
Our client purchased two 2,500 SF apartments in the building that were stacked vertically with the idea to combine them into a 5,000 SF Luxury Duplex. One apartment was on the 31st Floor while the other was on the 32nd Floor of the building.
The first challenge was combine the two units into a graceful residence that felt as if it were designed to be seamless between floors. This meant obtaining approvals for modifying (chopping) the structural slab, analyzing the structure to be demolished and then moving mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to accommodate the new internal stairs and apartment layouts.
While no expense was spared, we did have to contend with the Ritz Carleton review board and obtain approvals which required our drawings and specifications to be performed with the highest of standards.
We assembled a team of Structural, Mechanical, Electrical , Plumbing and Acoustical Engineers to complete the required specifications of proposing such an endeavor in a Class 1A High-Rise Fire Proof Building.
The Owner wanted no compromises when it came to quality of mill-work or materials and therefore we worked with some of the world’s best manufacturers and material providers. For example, our designs were produced by Boffi for the main kitchen, Poliform for the home study and Eggersman for the Master Closet. Custom metal and glass sliding doors throughout the project were manufactured in Italy by Lualdi, while everything else in the apartment was custom made locally.
The use of natural wood was extensive throughout the project. Hardwood floors were made from wide plank wire brushed natural Oak in a special matte finish. While the main Media Room space is fully paneled in a frozen walnut veneer that is carefully book-matched on both walls and ceilings to conceal custom lights and audio visual equipment.
An impressive collection of natural stone was selected for the project, with book-matched and mitered Silver, brushed Travertine for floors and select locations such as the living room fire place. Black St. Laurent was used for the Media Room Powder Room as well as for hidden closets in the Home Study. Calacatta Gold Marble was used for accents in the main Dining Room, Kitchen Counter as well as the Primary Bathroom. The Primary Bathroom was designed to have a three dimensional book matching effect where the stone veining patterns aligned on the floors, walls and ceilings of the space.
Most hardware and plumbing fixtures were selected with a custom British Racing Gold matte or polished nickel finish. Several hardware items such as glass door hinges were stripped and then custom plated in order to achieve a matching finish. Door hinges and handles were custom forged to be unique. The new stair railing was hand made by metal artist Gabrielle Shelton from our design and selection of brushed Munz Brass, a material known for its nautical properties and natural resistance to tarnish.
All lighting and furnishings in the project were custom order. The dining room chandelier is by Lindsey Aldelrman.
